It takes five simple twelve-year cycles to complete a 60-year Zodiac cycle. Twelve animals signs are assigned to each of the 12 years in combination with the five main elements of gold , wood, water, fire and earth.

The Rabbit, the fourth zodiac animal in the cycle, is featured in this series of stamps. The Year of the Rabbit is said to be tranquil and pleasant after the ferocious Year of the Tiger. In 1999, the Year of the Rabbit is ruled by the element of earth. The Earth Rabbit is a straight-faced and dependable being, he makes rational decision and sets realistic approach to his goals. Famous persons born in the year of the Rabbit include Albert Einstein and Ingrid Bergman.
